My mom worked for AT&T during the divestiture. It was almost a decade in the courts before a decision was handed down in 1982. As part of the agreement, AT&T spun off its local telephone services into a handful of regional companies (we called them "the baby bells").
In a dark twist of irony, the company we call AT&T today started as one of those baby bells. SBC bought the desiccated husk of the original company in 2005 essentially just so they could use the name.
